A 31-year-old Michigan woman has been arrested and charged after allegedly pouring boiling water on a 15-year-old girl following a fight in Pontiac, authorities said.
The incident, which happened on September 28, 2026, has drawn attention after investigators said the teenager suffered severe burns and remains hospitalized.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the area of Leonard Lane at about 7 p.m. following reports of a large fight involving dozens of people. Authorities said between 50 and 100 people were gathered in a parking lot when deputies arrived.
What Happened in the Michigan Incident?
Investigators said the woman, identified as Shanell Lakeisha Cohen, became involved in a physical altercation with the 15-year-old girl.
After their initial fight ended, authorities allege that Cohen went back to her residence, retrieved a pot of boiling water from the stove and returned outside.
The teenager was reportedly involved in another physical altercation with other people at the time. Detectives allege that Cohen approached her and poured the hot water onto her back.
The teenager was taken to a hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transferred to Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.
Authorities said she suffered extensive third-degree burns to her neck and much of her back and remained hospitalized as of the latest reports.
Woman Admitted to Pouring Hot Water, Police Say
Cohen reportedly went to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office's Pontiac substation on October 1 for an interview with detectives.
According to investigators, she admitted during the interview to pouring the hot water on the teenager. She was subsequently arrested and taken to the Oakland County Jail.
The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office authorized a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation.
Cohen was arraigned on October 1, with her bond set at $75,000 cash or surety, with a 10% provision, according to reports.
Michigan Woman Faces Court Hearing
Cohen is scheduled to return to court on October 13, 2026, for a probable cause conference.
If convicted, the charge could carry a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison, according to reporting by The Detroit News.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard described the case as an example of a dispute escalating into dangerous violence and said individuals responsible for such conduct would be held accountable.
