Osun State Governorship Election 2026: Adeleke Wins Second Term as Accord Party Candidate

Governor Ademola Adeleke has been declared winner of the 2026 Osun State governorship election, securing a second term after defeating 14 other candidates in Saturday's election.

The Results

INEC's Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, announced the final results early Sunday morning at the State Collation Centre in Osogbo. Adeleke, running under the Accord Party, polled 511,067 votes, winning in 19 of the state's 30 local government areas.

His closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), came second with 444,815 votes, winning the remaining 11 local governments. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) placed a distant third with 17,180 votes.

Out of 1,010,684 accredited voters, the election recorded 985,079 valid votes, with 207 ballots rejected.

Background

This marks Adeleke's second term as governor. He first won the seat in 2022, defeating then-incumbent Gboyega Oyetola of the APC. Adeleke later defected from the PDP to the Accord Party ahead of this year's re-election bid. Notably, both the PDP and Labour Party did not field candidates in this election.

The election, originally scheduled for August 8, was rescheduled by INEC to August 15.

Security and Tension During Voting

The lead-up to the election was marked by heightened political tension, with the ruling party and APC each accusing the other of involvement in violence and property destruction. In response, police deployed 15,000 personnel and 30 commissioners of police across the state to ensure a peaceful process. Despite these measures, isolated incidents were reported, including disruption at a polling unit in Ejigbo where INEC materials were destroyed.

What's Next

With the results now declared, attention turns to Adeleke's second term and how he plans to build on his previous administration's agenda for the state.
